The hunter/predator/beast slowly approached/ crept/slithered closer, its eyes/gaze/sight fixed on the innocent/unaware/playful chicks.

The little chicks played/ran/foraged around, completely unafraid/oblivious/clueless. They didn't even notice the danger/threat/risk until it was almost too late. Suddenly, the hunter/predator/beast made a quick/swift/sudden move/attack/leap. The little chicks scattered/fled/screamed in terror, trying to escape/hide/survive.
